Reflection Journal 5 of TLL


The material today is technology to teach thinking skills. Actually we have already known before that technology can teach reading, writing, speaking and listening skills, and now its time to know that technology can also teach the thinking skills. It is show that technology very useful and important in teaching and learning process.
In this article, i know that technology can support thinking skills by some ways and also the use of computers to teach thinking skills. Actualy technology, especially computer provie so many software to teach thinking skills. But, the main point is not only based on the software in computer itself , but also it will be better if the teacher take a part in the eaching and learning process by design classroom in some ways. Such as, learning actvities are informed by an understanding of cognitive processes involved in language learning, technology tools are carefully selected to support a wide range of thinking and problem-solving, and these tools are use within an learning approach based on an understanding of inquiry.


As a result, all the statement that said technology are very useful for the teaching and learning process is true. This article is evidence that technology very useful for us. I remember my lecture said that we are a digital native. So, we always depend on the technology. But, we have to decide the right technology tools that can support our goal to learn something. If we are not selected to use technology, it can not really support our goal in learning something. According to me, as the generation of teacher, we have to aware about the tools of technology that can support our teaching process. So, our students will get easy to learn something in the class. But, do not make our students use all the technology without selected the right tools to raise our objectives. Teacher as the main actor in teaching and learning process.

Reflection journal for PETA week 10



This is my reflection journal for week 10. In this session we learned 4 materials, consists of lesson plan, mutiple intellegences, cooperative learning, effective teaching & teacher, and the last one is differentiated instruction. The differentiated instruction was new for us and fortunately my group had this material, so we could learn this material more deeply.
We did group work to learned this material. At the first, we discussed in group, after that we presented our result in front of the class to shared our knowledge to our friends. After we presented it, there were asked question session, so our friends could asked some question if there were some part that they didn't understand.
Based on goup presentation in the class I could learned more deeply than before, bacause actually we have already learned the material in the last session, except the differentiated instruction. At the first, the multiple inteegences. Based on my friends presentation I know that actually multiple intellegences are very importante to teachers to know this elements, because we know that everyone has their own MI. So, each of us has difference Multiple Intellegence. In this case, there are some students in the class with difference Multiple Intellegences. So, how can the teachers accomodate all the students in the class with difference MI?, that is why I said that Multiple Intellegences are very importante. Teacher should consider and aware with the students' MI. So, they can provide some activities that can encourage the sudents to learn based on their strength.
The second material was about lesson plan. We have already known about the important of the lesson plan. But, one important thing that actually lesson plan is guide for the teachers not the recipe. If the recipe we can not change the ingredients in the recipe because if we change the ingrediens it become other food, not will be the same food. While the lesson plan is guide, we can change the activities if we things that the real fact is not really good to do our activities in our lesson plan. In this part I have a question that actually my master teacher in school experience didn't use lesson plan in their teaching process. He said that lesson plan is impotant, and you have to make lesson plan in written at least one in your whole teaching proces. But, for me my lesson plan was already in my mind and I can do anything well without written lesson plan. According to me, I agrre with my master teacher said. I think lessom plan is very important for guide teacher to do teaching process, and we have to write a lesson plan. But I think as teachers we have a lot of things to do, not only to write lesson plan. That is why if the teacher only save their lesson plan in their mind it may, because actually they have it. Therefore, the point is not to have the written lesson plan, but the teacher have to make a lesson plan, either in written or in their mind.

The third material was diferentiated instruction. This was my group material. Based on the article that Miss Ine gave to us, I know that ddifferentiated instrution is the model of instruction that focus on awareness of teacher to know and consider about students' needs. In this case students' needs are like their learning style, multiple intellegence and so on. Actually there are some factors that influence differenciated instruction. Such as learning style, multiple intellegence, their physical background, ethnicity background, readiness, confidentiality, and learning pace. Teaher have to aware and consider about these factors. It is also related to multiple intellegences that students have to consider of students' MI. So they can provide actvities to encourage their students' needs. But, the point is differenciated instruction is the solving of the problem in Multple Intellegence. In this model of instruction teacher should provide some material which is can encourage students' needs from some aspects. Such as content, process, and product. According to me, teacher shoud provide different way to deliver the material but in the same content, for example provide novel to visual, and provide tape recorder or movie for auditory students. Teacher also should devide the class into some groups based on the students' needs. The last is teacher should give the free way to students do their work. Studens can choose the product they want to make to do their work. In my opinion, this model is very difficult to implement because the teacher should be dilligent if they want to implement it.
The fourth was about cooperative learning. In my opinion, cooperative learning is the opposite of defferenciated instruction. In differenciated instruction teacher devide groups based on their same charactheristics, but in cooperative learning teacher devide groups balance. So, the students that not really good in some material gather with students which is good in the material. So, they can help each other. One moto that I really excited from this material is 'my success benefits you & your success benefts me'. Based on this moto, we know that they can help each other in this approach. Actually this approach is same with group interaction. But, the differencess is coopeartive learning is approach, while group interaction is like the technique or strategy to do this approach.
The last material in this session was effective teachinng and effective teacher. This is very important for me because my goal is to be effective teacher that can make effective teaching. Actually the defnition of effective teacher is teacher who can make effective teaching in order to empower learners to become effective learners. And effective teaching is if the students can construct and understand the material by themselves. So, they integrated each other. The effective teacher can make effective teaching. Effective teaching can encourage students to learn actively by themselves.
As a result, these material are very important for me, to be a professional teacher. These material also integrated each other to encourage me to became a good and professional teacher. I thankful to Miss Ine, because she gave me these importante material and support me to do better to become good in teaching process.

Reflection Paper School Experience 

 

This is my reflection for school experience. I observed in SMA N 82 South Jakarta in two weeks. During my observation I taught until 5 times. Two of them, I only gave the instruction and asked the students to do listening section, while in another class I gave the material and also some activities in classroom. Actually I am very lucky because my master teacher asked me to taught the students during the whole English class. So, my partner and I taught the students in 90 minutes and we can do all the things in our lesson plan well. Another good point is my master teacher asked us to teach the students alone. So, in the second week we have to teach the students alone, while my partner only accompanied me in the classroom but she did not teach the students. We have a change to do this only once. But, I think it was good because actually when I taught my students alone, I felt that I be a real teacher and I can learned about the real problem will occur when I be a teacher, also I can found how to solve these problem.


In this observation I observed my master teacher only once and not in a whole English class, because actually when I will observed my master teacher, there were some guest from SMA N 1 Ambon and unfortunately my master teacher was the presenter in the event. So, he only taught the students until 15 minutes. He taught in science class grade 12. I found some principles of Brown that occurred in the class. Such as, Meaningful Learning, Intrinsic Motivation, and Strategic Investment. In this session the teacher gave the material used Microsoft power point, and he did the lecturing to give the material to the students. He also taught the students with loud voice, so, the students can easy to understand the material and when the teacher asked them to make the discussion text. They can make a good discussion text. That is why I said that the teacher can gave the Meaningful Learning to the students. But, actually when I asked the students about discussion text. They said that they have known about discussion text, so, when the teacher taught them about discussion text, it was like additional knowledge for discussion text. Based on this case, I think prior knowledge is also important to make the students have meaningful learning. If it was only based on the lecturing by the teacher which is only 5-7 minutes, and the students did not have prior knowledge about the material, it possible if they will make some mistakes in the discussion text.
Another elements which is encourage the Meaningful Learning are Intrinsic Motivation and Strategic Investment. I think they are related each other. Actually I found that some students have Intrinsic Motivation and Strategic Investment. when the teacher lecturing the material, most of students paid attention and listening the teacher explanation. It showed that the students have intrinsic motivation to learn English and to understand the material, although not all students have it. Some students which is male students did not understand about the material, they only sit and listening the teacher but they did not understand the material. After the class finished, I interviewed some students. Which is male and female, about their motivation and strategic to learn English. The answers are most of female students who learn English because they like English, and they thought that English is important for their future. While the male students answer that they learn English because it is a must. If they do not learn English they will get bad score, although they did not like it and they have less intrinsic motivation to learn English.
In my opinion, genre is also influenced the intrinsic motivation. The female students have more intrinsic motivation while the male students have less intrinsic motivation. In the real fact, the female students think that learn English is important to their future. But, the male students think that it is only for formality in the school. Even in another class that my partner and I taught, I found that there was a male students which is very good in English, but he did not want to learn English in my class. They went outside and did not come back again. It was very trouble because actually his ability in speaking English is very good. Because when I asked him by English, he could answer my question in English too, even his pronunciation is better than me. But he did not want to learn English because he was lazy. It showed that female students maybe have more intrinsic motivation than male students because they have differences in way of thinking.

Actually another interesting point is about the status of society and economic. I saw that most of students in this school come from high economic status and when I asked my master teacher about it, the answer is right. Based on my interviewed from my master teacher and from some students, the real fact is because of the students come from high economic status, most of them joined in English course outside the school and they think that they can learn more in the course or even the teacher in the course more smart than the teacher in the school. So, they thought that learn English in the school is unimportant for them. Even they do not afraid if they get bad score in school because their parents can pay the school to get the high score. Well, I think this issue only occurred in the cinema, but it occurred in the real fact. As a teacher candidates I think the students need the good teaching from their parents. Their parents should give them the knowledge about live. How to appreciate each other and so on. So, their children will growth up with the good behavior.
Talking about the Strategic Investment, actually their high economic status help them to get good strategic to learn English. Such as joined in the good and famous English course, watching western video, and have holiday in another country. By make a conversation with the native speaker in another country it makes they practice and can improve their ability in English. Even this is the good way to practice our ability in speaking English.
On the other hand, I found some cases during the school experience. Actually when my partner and I taught the students, I found some principles occurred in my class, but it was not occurred in my master teacher class. Such as, Automaticity, Willingness to Communicate, and Communicative Competence. But, I only found these principles in social class, while in the science class I did not find it. I found that in the social class the students always spoke in English if they want to ask something and even if they want to speak anything in the class. It showed that the students have ability in communicative and also they have willingness to communicate in English. They was very confidence to speak English with us. In this class also occurred the Automaticity principle. So, at the beginning of the class we used English all the time until the end of the class and we did some games to grab their attention. Because of that, the students naturally speak English too. So, we can grab their attention and they felt comfortable with us, that is why they were confidence to speak English with us. While when the teacher taught them they suddenly silent and listen to the teacher. But, they did not speak anything, or even they spoke in Indonesia language. I Curious with this case, so, I asked the students' opinion about my master teacher. They answer that my master teacher is very wise and they really appreciate the teacher, because of that they felt there was a distance between the teacher and students. So,they felt shame to speak English with the teacher. That is the point, because of the students really appreciate the teacher and they felt there was a distance among them. So, they unconfidence to speak English to the teacher maybe because they afraid if they make mistakes. Because most students said like that.
In my opinion, based on the answer from my master teacher when I interviewed him and based on the real situation. As I said before, I think the Automaticity not occurred in my master teacher class because my master teacher make a distance between him and the students. Although he said that their students also speak English with him but the real situation is not. The students spoke English with him because they asked them to speak English for the speaking score not because the teacher built the natural approach in the class.
Another issue is about the communicative competence in this school. The social class better than science class. My master teacher also agree about that. The reason is because the social class more competence in the speaking skill, and there are more interpersonal students who can speak with another people and easy to make relationship to the others. Even though we know that the science class have good behavior than the social class, but the science class not too good in speaking. As we know that each of student have the ability in some parts like Multiple Intelligences, and about the science class their ability is in calculate something. So, it is possible if the social class better in speaking skill than in science class.
As a result, actually there were some issues that I found in the school experience. Based on these issues I can get more knowledge about teaching process. I just know that the main point is as a teacher we have to built a good relationship with my students, to make them comfortable with us. If our students feel comfort with us, they will confidence to speak English although their ability in speaking is not too good, But they will feel confidence and learn together with the teacher. I want to say something to my friends who are the teacher candidates, we have to be a professional teacher and make the difference in the education site in Indonesia.

Technology and writing



this is my reflection journal for topic 10; technology to teach writing. After i read the article about technology and teach writing, i got some knowledge that really important for me. I just know that there are some role and also some approach to teach writing and used technology. These approach had been using since 1960s until now, but there are some improvement from the implementation.
These approach have some differences each others. Actually in the first approach it only focused on linguistics forms. While in the second approach it focused on recognizing the elements of the topic. For example, how to write a well essay, how to write a good conclusion ad so on. Based on these approach i found that time by time the focused of these approach improved to the other one. It is related to the speaking elements. If i see the stage of speaking elements the first stage is about accuracy and it is similar with the writing stage that the first approach is focused on grammar. Accuracy is related to grammar. If we want to learn accuracy we have to learn about grammar. It showed that the language skills approach are integrated and also have similarities each other.


The other approach of speaking and writing are have similarities too. As we know that the other stage of speaking focused on fluency and in the writing the other approach is free writing activities. So, students have a freedom in writing activities and they may get a feedback or comment from their friends. It is same with the fluency in the speaking approach. Students have a freedom to speak anything without afraid to make a mistake and they can get the improvement from their friends if they make a mistaken.
Based on those explanation, in my opinion language skills are integrated each other especially writing and speaking skills. It is make students easy to learn all the language skills approach especially speaking and writing because both of them related each other. About the technology to teach these language skills, in my opinion it is very useful for use technology to teach writing and speaking skills because technology provide so many tools and software to learn about writing skills. learn with technology is more interesting than manually. We can learn interesting activities such as games, and another website that challenged our critical thinking. But, again we can not use technology all the time, just use technology as the machine that can help you to learn something. You have to learn about writing skills by manually or by books too. So, you can get so many references and you can compare the effectiveness by using technology and using books. Which one can make you learn language skills effectively ?.

Identity Among Others



At the begining of this lesson we have already talked about our personal identity and my opinion about identity among others. Based on this case I conclude that the personal identity is very useful and important for us. In addition we know that indonesia has so many cultures and each culture has its own identity. Because of that we can not say that we only have one identity but actually we have muliple identity as a human and we have to pay attention with our identity among others.
In my opinion i have so many identity in this world. When I was born actually I have identity as a human, then over time and I became an adolescence then I started to join in the school I have more identity, not only as a human but also as a students,friend for my friends, a women and a daughter for my parents.
In addition, now I live and growth up in Jakarta. So, my culture is Jakarta and because of that my personal identity is be increased. Based on this site my identiity is Not only as a students, chidren, and women but also as a Betawiness, then if we see based on the religion site my identity is muslim because my religion is Islam.
On the other hand, I relize that live with so many identity is not easy, it is quite difficult or even it is very difficult. Actually I know that as a student I have to do all the best in my school, I have to do all my assignment, I have to study hard, and I also have to do some non academik activiy in my school. But, I can not erase that I am a daughter for my parents too. So, as a daughter and I gonna be adults or indonesian people call it 'anak perawan', I also should help my parents in my home. But, sometimes times is running away and it is not fiendly with me. Well, I should balance both of them. I have to devide my time to do all my activities as a students and also as a daughter.
Well, I think it is not enough. I still have identity as a women and a friend for my friends. As a women I want to do some relaxasing like shoping, go to the barber shop and ect. But, as a friend I have to help my friends who have a problem in her/his live. So, it is very difficult to do all my identity in this world. I have to think creatively to do all my identity.
In addition, I know that Indonesia has so many culture, and as an indonesian people we have to recognise that we have some differences each others. Because of that there are so many social issues in Indonesia. I remember my guesst dosen said that indonesia is multicultural country and because of that there are some stage of culture in indonesia. For example, the Batakness is minoritas than javaness, but, batakness is be mayoritas than the other culture in their place. Based on this case we know that actually sometimes multiculturalisme can devide the indonesian people to be mayoritas and minoritas, and in my opinion it is not good because as we know that indonesia is one for all, or we can say “Negara Kesatuan Republik Indonesia”.
In my environment there are so many people from the other place like from Java, Bali, Sumatera and Sulawesi. For example, in SSE there so many people fro those place, but in SSE we are like a family because we apply our motto that 'together we can make a different'. So, eventhough we are different each other, but we do all the things together so the differences is not appear, or even we can make a different in the edducation site together.


In my opinion, if all the indonessian people apply our motto 'Bhineka Tunggal Ika'. Indonesia country will be more better than now. There is no more coflict of culture and another problem that occur in Indonesia. We know that there are some conflict of culture like madura vs dayak, the papua citizen, and so on. So, I think the indonesian people should be more criticaly and can apreciate the other culture to make indonesia one for all.
As a result, as a teacher candidates I want to make indonesia more better than now by education. I think give the knowledge about the appreciation of culture is very impotant to the young generation. If they have knowledge to appreciat each other they can apply it in their live. So, for the generation of teacher, come on together we can make a different.

E-reflection for PETA ; School experience week 2

This is my reflection for school experience 2. On this week I did the team teaching with my partner. There are so many interesting things in the school experience. Actually I taught the students lonely. So, my partner only acompany me in the class but not taught the students. As I said before that I used group interaction model in my class, and it worked. But actually when I observed my friend class, it didn't work. Most of the students didn't work in group, they just chated with her friends. Based on this case, I know there is no the best model of instruction, it is depend on the studens' characeristic. If you use group interaction but your students doesn't like work in group, so they will not join in the group.
On this week I always taught and observed the students in grades 12 both in social and science class. I found that there are some differences between social and science class. Actually we know that science class is more polite and pay attention with the teacher. While in the social class was very difficult to teach them because most of them can not pay attention with the teacher. If we want to teach the social class and creat the condusive situation we have to grab their attention by some interesting techniques. That is the real situation that I found in the school experience. In addition, if we talking about the students' ability in english, the social class is better than the science class in 82 Senior High School. It is showed based on the score in the listening and reading test, also based on the ability to speak english. In the social class most of the students spook in english but in the science class most of them spook in bahasa.
After I observed my class I interviewed my master teacher about the teaching techniques and the models of instruction he used in the class. Based on his explanation I got so many references to teach my students. My master teacher used some model of instruction, like lecture discussion and direct instruction. But if the group interaction he reraly used it. My master tecacher said that he always flexible in the class. But he only focus in peaking and listening. So, he always pushed his students to speak english.
Based on the knowledge that my master teaher gave to me, I know that the important things in the teaching process are we have to give our students the attractive material, prepare the teaching tools, and mastering the material. If we have those things, we can sucess in teahing process. He also told me how to grab the student's attention. And now, in my opinion so difficult to grab the students attention. We have to think creatively to creat the attractive way to make our students pay attention, even make my voice be louder is one of the way to grab the students' attention.
I very proud with the school experience programe, because I got so many experience and knowledge to be a teacher.

e-reflection school experience 1th for PETA


This is the 1th reflection journal for school experience week one. In this school experience I have been observed in 82nd senior high school. When i satrted the school experience in the first day i just knew that my master teacher used english when he taught their students.  Fortunetly, we have to speak english all the time when we do the team teaching.
Actually for the first day we only observed the english class. So the teacher asked me to observed the listening section in 10th and 12th gardes. In the listening section i found that there was some students that cheated their friends’ answer. Well, i know that maybe cheating is common in Indonesia school today. That’s why i interested in this topic and i want to observed about this later.
In  the second day we devided the schedule for do the team teaching. Actually in the schedule we have to do the team teaching in the next week but in the real situation i have done it with my partner today. Fortunetly my master teacher let us to taught the students during the english class, so we taught the students from the begining until the ending of the class. In the team teaching we used some models of interaction. It is consits of lecture discussion, direct instruction and group interaction. So we used direct instruction for gave the material, and we used lecture discussion to know the student’s understanding about the meterial, and the last one we used the group interaction in discussion activity to made students more active during the class.
Based on my experience when i did team teaching today, in my opinion the group interaction and the lecture discussion is the effective instruction to make the students be active and more easy to get the material. Actually the students in 82nd senior high school is good in english, they can understand what i said and they can speak in english. So, it makes me easy to teach them.
